Industry analysis have estimated 74% - 79% of the soil in most carpet is "Dry particulate matter", and can in most cases be effectively removed by a thorough dry vacuuming.

It is for this reason, and in the ' Cleaning Standards ' put forth by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) that this is a necessary step to take place prior to the Steam Cleaning (hot water extraction).

With this said, because this most important step in the cleaning process can be VERY TIME CONSUMING, most cleaners, not excluding even those certified, either skip this step totally, or simply breeze through the motions. When this occurs the dry particulate left behind is hit with a steam cleaner, and then transformed into a wet particulate (commonly known as MUD). Once the cleaner has left your house and as your carpet dries, this mud containing soils, contaminants, pollutants, dust-mites&waste, pet dander and other allergens still laying at the foundation of your carpet begins to wick up the carpet fibers (like a candle) to the carpets' surface, and you wonder why some of those spots came back?
